Taking a Walk with Peace

By: Demari Syblis (Grade 9)

Peace Will Persevere Through Enduring Unity And Collaborative Communities

During Catholic Education Week, the TCDSB hosts mass and peace walk to promote peace in downtown Toronto.

The Peace walk is a great opportunity for members of the Catholic community to walk in unity and exude peace in the downtown Toronto area. Secondary students get the chance to represent their schools and the TCDSB, in an active peaceful manner.

The Peace walk is celebrated with a province-wide mass held at the Catholic Education Center (CEC). After breaking bread at the center, students commute downtown and perform the peace walk. Staff and students make numerous stops designated locations; students and their chaplaincy leaders get the chance to hand out lunches to homeless people and say prayers together for peace as a unified group. The peace walk then wraps up at St. Mike's Cathedral for the final stop.

The Peace walk can also be perceived as an occasion where students can come together in solidarity, to advocate their faith by a display of signs and communal prayer. The Peace walk also allows the students who participate to gain a stronger sense of their faith.

The mass overall is a great experience and many have supported it. “We do Catholic Education Week, every week in our board and we are so proud of it,” stated Mr. Rory McGuckin, the Director of Education of the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
