The Option of a SHSM

By: Andrew Oliveira (Grade 9)

SHSM Allows For Skills To Be Developed And Experiences To Be Created

A specialty high school major or SHSM as it’s referred to is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific sector while meeting the requirements to graduate from secondary school.

The following requirements are needed to complete any specific SHSM: a bundle of grade 11 or 12 credits that include cooperative learning and leadership, certifications like first-aid, CPR and WHMIS safety, explore careers, engage in experiences connected with the student’s postsecondary plans and learn workplace skills to add to their portfolios.

Students who complete all requirements will receive a red seal on their secondary school diploma and an SHSM Record Card documenting achievement is placed in the student’s Ontario School Record (OSR).

Chaminade offers the following SHSM Programs: Environmental overseen by Mr. Romano, Sports - Mr. Di Rezze,  Business or Technology - Mr. Perotta and Mr. Mason. Registering for SHSM takes place at the end of grade 10 with your appointed guidance counselor.

An SHSM allows students to focus on knowledge and skills that are of particular importance in certain sectors and to obtain certifications recognized in those sectors, as they work towards meeting the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

SHSM is definitely worth considering and recommended by teachers if you want to learn new and valuable skills and certifications that will enhance your resume when searching part-time employment or upon graduation.
