Chaminade Students Learn Road Safety

By: Patrick Carey (Grade 10)

Road Safety Within This Day And Age Is Significant, Especially With Canada's Recent Law Changes

In May, grade 10 students at Chaminade College School had an interactive presentation on driving safety, during periods 1 and 2.

Students in grade 10 are either approaching age 16 or have already gotten there. For grade 10 students, getting a driving license and being able to drive your first car is huge. Before they are able to feel this sense of accomplishment and are able to get on the road, there are a lot of precautions and tips that young drivers should know.

A grade 10 student who has already completed their written driving test also had something to say about the presentation. “I think that getting to know the dangers of so many little things is super important, that way we won’t be getting into bad situations on the road.”

In 2019, MADD Canada has once again confirmed that the No. 1 cause of death for ages 15 to 24 is car accidents. A whopping 45 percent of these accidents involve alcohol or drugs. The presentation on Tuesday has hopes to change these numbers.

Another student considering taking their written test adds, “I think that teenagers are really stubborn and inconsiderate when it comes to driving without safety or concern for other people’s lives.” Statistics prove that alcohol is a factor in 3 to 4 car accidents every day in Canada. The next generation needs to start thinking about how they can change these stats.

It is definitely a great idea to have driving safety programs such as these, because today's teens are the next generation of drivers, and they need to understand how to prevent accidents and drive properly. If teenagers don't learn how to drive moderately now, how will the future generation live safe and efficient lives in a fast moving world where road transportation is a necessity?
